Mechanisms of Pain: Veterinary Short Course at U.C. San Diego

August 15-18, 2007 - San Diego, CA

Synapse

From the complex physiology of the primary afferent systems and their transducer mechanisms, to the rich synaptic connectivity of the spinal dorsal horn and the higher order processing of nociceptive information in the thalamus, limbic system and cortex, our fundamental understanding of pain biology has advanced remarkably in the past 30 years.

While clinical pain management in veterinary patients is an important and expanding discipline, the present lecture series is aimed at providing an in depth consideration of basic mechanisms for the veterinary practioner and scientist. This four day intensive course (approximately 24 lecture hours) features an exceptional cadre of active investigators in all aspects of pain research. Experts will review current thinking in the anatomic elements of the pathways that process pain information, the physiological properties of these systems after tissue and nerve injury pain, and the pharmacology of these systems in acute and chronic pain states.

Sample Topics

  • Anatomy of sensory systems
  • Peripheral nerve and DRG structure
  • Peripheral organization: dermatomes, myotomes and sclerotomes
  • Primary afferents
  • Dorsal horn: anatomy and physiology
  • Trigeminal and visceral sensory systems
  • Spinal projection systems
  • Supraspinal systems: thalamus, cortex
  • Post-tissue injury pain states
  • Neuropathic pain: molecular pathology/li>
  • Mechanisms of analgesic agents
  • Models of pain
  • Pain states: diabetic neuropathy, incisional pain, cancer pain, osteoarthritis, visceral pain

Sponsorship Opportunities

The UCSD Department of Anesthesiology is currently looking for sponsors for the 2007 Mechanisms of Pain course. These funds will help to offset the registraion fees for the course, enabling even more attendees for this year's course, as well as cover some of the course exspenses. As a sponsor, your potential audience will include veterinarians in general and specialty practice, academic and industry veterinarians, residents and graduate students in relevant disciplines.

For more information on sponsorship, read this letter from Dr. Tony Yaksh, UCSD Dept. of Anesthesiology Professor and Vice-Chair of Research.

Sponsorship confirmation deadline is May 15!
